The John Goe Award: Rotarian of the Year

The John Goe Award is presented each year to a Rotarian who has stood out above all members and truly demonstrated the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.” This outstanding member is selected each year by the outgoing president of the Rotary Club of Casto Valley.

John Goe was a retried Master Mariner. He served three years on the ammunition run to Vietnam and five years during WWII. John received four combat bars for his contribution to the U.S. Naval Reserve and U.S. Maritime Administration.

After John and his wife Dorothy retired, they moved to Castro Valley. John joined the Rotary Club in 1980 with the classification of Community Service. Besides Rotary he served on the Castro Valley Chamber of Commerce Board and the H.A.R.D Board. Although John was an old crusty retired sea captain, he had a heart of gold and would do anything for the betterment of Castro Valley and its residents. John had a large sit-down bar in his home which he made available for anyone who wanted to hold any type of meeting.

John loved his community, and they loved him thus the John Goe Award has been presented annually in his name since 1982
