President Dr. Heidi brought down the gavel for the second time of her Presidential Year at Don Jose’s in Castro Valley, and Bonnie Best was asked to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Dr. Heidi followed the Pledge of Allegiance asking Dwight Perry to share the passing of a truly great Rotarian, Owen Smith, followed by two of his old Rotary friends, Dwight  and Cliff Sherwood, sharing their thoughts of this great man, and asked that our thoughts and prayers be with Mrs. Smith (Erma), daughter Kelly and the family.  The Memorial Service will be next Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church at the corner of Grove Way and Redwood Road.  The time will be either 2 or 2:30pm and will be confirmed by Dwight when confirmed.  Mr. Smith’s daughter, Kelly, asked that donations be directed to either CV Rotary (not Rotary Foundation) or CV Arts Foundation.  Both organizations were near and dear to Mr. Smith.

THOUGHT(s) FOR THE DAY -  In honor of Mr. Owen Smith, who lived life well:  In matters of principle, stand like a rock; in matters of taste, swim with the current. ~Thomas Jefferson
In honor of our President Dr. Heidi’s second meeting (and knowing Mr. Smith was always ready for a good laugh) from that wise old sage, Johnny Carson channeled through Bruce Johnson: "Happiness is your dentist telling you it won't hurt and then having her catch her hand in the drill."
SINGING WITH CETA - Rather than a song, Dr. Heidi led those present in a moment of silence.

VISITORS - Numbya Aziz and Owen McGrath plus one of our favorites, Leslie Poniatowski!
SAL TEDESCO MEMORIAL HELLO SONG - Ben Gurule led the way . . .
SPECIAL THANK YOU FROM PRESIDENT HEIDI - Dr. Heidi thanked everyone who has already completed the questionnaires distributed last week and sent to us electronically . . . she distributed the responses so far . . . a master list will come later . . .

NOTE: At the direction of Dr. Heidi, the weekly Castro Valley Rotary COG is being distributed directly by our Scribe using e-mail, by President Heidi using Club Runner and posted on www.castrovalleyrotary.org by Ken O-Donnell . . . hopefully this will ensure that everyone receives the COG every week in some form . . . I would have you notify BruceJohnson@rcs.edu if you are not getting it, but that would be silly, right?  Blessings!

PRESIDENT DR. HEIDI’S CLUB THEME FOR THE YEAR:  "LIGHT UP ROTARY WITH A SMILE"
(Per our President, we will be Brush up on your Rotary knowledge, Fill a need in Community and International Service, Drill Down deep in your heart for Peace in the World and many more that your Scribe failed to record!)

WHAT’S HAPPENING WITHIN CASTRO VALLEY ROTARY AND IN CASTRO VALLEY?
For some of the absolute best pictures of our activities, please thank Gary Bosley for his hard work as he has captured many of our events for us.
•    The FESCO pix are at fesco.shutterfly.com . . .
•    The chilicook off shots are at ChiliCookOff2014.shutterfly.com . . .
•    The Eden photos are at edenwaterfall.shutterfly.com . . .
the great thing is that no special access is required on either site -- people just go to the URL (or cut and paste them in in search box) and click on one of the small photos.  The photos enlarge.  Thanks, Gary!

Also, please remember to visit www.castrovalleyrotary.org often and also www.rowellranchrodeoparade.com as these websites that we maintain and are packed with information and lots of pictures

PROGRAM - Our second program of President Dr. Heidi’s year was . . . Len Eisenberg, Geologist, who spoke to us on Fracking!   He discussed what fracking means (it is a slang term for hydraulic fracturing - “Fracking” refers to the procedure of creating fractures in rocks and rock formations by injecting fluid into cracks to force them further open so the larger fissures can allow more oil and gas to flow out of the formation and into the wellbore, from where it can be extracted), how it has revolutionized the energy industry (The US will become a net natural gas exporter by 2020, and a net oil exporter by 2030), and the problems associated with it and the future of petroleum.  He also shared how fracking has caused the rebirth of North Dakota where employment is near zero.  The success in North Dakota and projected for the petroleum business are the result of two things: Directional Drilling and Fracking.  Very informative presentation.
LOOKING FOR THE MOLAR WITH THE GOLD GLITTER FILLING DONE “JUST FOR US” BY DR. HEIDI - With the $30.00 and 18 molars in the bag, Ben Gurule reached into the bag searching for the white molar free from decay with golden sprinkles and won . . . $5.00 for pulling a white tooth free of decay but lacking golden sprinkles!  Had Ben pulled out a decayed tooth, he would have had to pay $5.00!
