Celebrating 100 Years of the Rowell Ranch Pro Rodeo
Every year, the Rotary Clubs of Castro Valley and Hayward hold a joint lunch meeting to celebrate the Rowell Ranch Pro Rodeo, which is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year.  This year's lunch was hosted by Castro Valley with an outstanding turnout of Hayward Rotarians.  Rotarians and guests enjoyed informative presentations from:
  • Janet Lemons (Rowell Ranch Rodeo Board of Directors) speaking on behalf of Russ Fields (President of the Rowell Ranch Rodeo Board of Directors) who was running cattle that day.  Janet provided a brief history of the Rodeo, an overview of the local, national, and even international contestants, focusing on their experiences during the Rodeo.  Janet reviewed the schedule of the many programs during the week (e.g., Cecil Jones Cowboy Challenge, Cowboy Picnic, Local Team Roping, Special Partners Program, Day of the Cowboy).  See the complete schedule here with information regarding tickets.
  • Bridgette Davilla, Miss Rowell Ranch Rodeo Queen Coordinator, who described the process to select a Rodeo Queen, who is selected during the Rodeo, and the role the Queen plays with the Rodeo.  Read more about the Rodeo Queen selection process here.
  • Katie Ward-Crummey, the current Rodeo Queen, who described her experiences as the Queen and what it has meant to her. Read more about Katie here.
  • Olivia Sherman, a contestant for the 2022 Rodeo Queen, who presented her contestant's speech and demonstrated the impromptu interview portion of the contest.
Be sure to watch the video of each presentation to learn more about the Rowell Ranch Pro Rodeo on May 20-22 plus the events leading up to the Rodeo.

George Pacheco (Hayward) asked for a moment of silence to recognize two, longtime Hayward Rotarians, Dick Bowman and Ed Phelps, who passed away over the weekend.
Mona Diamantine (Hayward) invited everyone to the Club's upcoming Celebration of the Century! to celebrate the Club's 100th Anniversary on June 17th.
Dave Sadoff reported the 14th Annual Castro Valley Show is scheduled for June 18th.  There are almost 300 cars entering the show.  Rotarians are needed to staff the event and the Rotary booth.  Watch for signup sheets.
Dwight Perry Receives District 5170 Award
Jim Negri recognized President Dwight Perry on his recent recognition at the District 5170 Conference for Outstanding Service on behalf of the Polio Plus campaign.  Jim made a generous donation to Polio Plus in Dwight's honor and Dwight matched it.

There is still time to make a donation to the Polio Plus campaign.  Make your check to TRF and bring it to the next meeting.
Howard Morrison, Associate Publisher of the Castro Valley Forum, will be the speaker at lunch on May 24th.  Be sure to make your reservation for what promises to be a very informative presentation.
