Aquatic Programs at EBRPD
Pete DeQuincy, Lifeguard Services Manager
Pete DeQuincy is the Manager for Lifeguard Services, which is part of the East Bay Regional Park District Fire Department.  Pete is a national and international presenter on aquatic programs and safety.  He has assisted in developing materials for the Red Cross.

In his role, Pete oversees 11 swim facilities with 160 employees that annually serve over 500,000 people.  In his presentation, Pete repeatedly focused on how Lifeguard Services exemplify and prompt the EBRPD Core Values. Throughout the presentation, Pete described and showed photos and videos of the programs offered by ERRPD accompanied by numerous statistics that demonstrated the range of service.  Historically, Lifeguard Service made presentations at school sites, but during the pandemic, it has made over 100 virtual presentations for school.  One of the many interesting statistics was the 108,532 drowning prevention interventions in one year.

Among the outstanding programs that Pete described were
  • Lifejacket loaner program that loaned 45,000 lifejackets a season;
  • Water safety program in Spanish at Conta Loma and Del Valle;
  • School bussing programs at Crow Canyon, Crown, and Contra Loma;
  • Partnership with Castro Valley and San Leandro High Schools and Eden Area ROP to train students;
  • Partnership with other community organizations;
  • A Water Competency pilot program that trains five-year old on water safety - you definitely need to watch the video of this program.
These programs are only some of the outstanding EBRPD programs that Pete described in his presentation.

Castro Valley High School on KQED
In July, Dr. Jason Reiman, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services for Castro Valley USD, shared how the district is Building a Welcoming, Safe, and Rigorous Learning Environment.  Recently, he shared that a correspondent from KQED came to look at the CVUSD summer program and interviewed students and staff regarding the impact of COVID and how CVUSD is responding to students' academic and social emotional needs. While the piece highlighted the impact that COVID has had on students, the piece also highlighted the great work that CVUSD is doingCongratulations to the students and staff for their efforts.
Rotary Supports Students
The Rotary Club of Castro Valley has a long history of supporting students (e.g., Interact Clubs, Camp RYLA, scholarships, Backpack Project, Literacy Projects).  Last spring, the Club helped fund t-shirts for the graduating seniors at Castro Valley High School, Class of 2021.  The Club received the following thank you note from CVHS Activities Director Tommy Maloney, "On behalf of the class of 2021 I'd like to thank Rotary for their generous donation last spring.  The students loved their class shirts and it wouldn't have been possible without your contributions."
