Eden Health District CEO Mark Friedman and Board Member Pam Russo provided an update on the District including how the District is addressing the COVID-19 pandemic.  CEO Friedman started on March 2, 2020, and almost immediately was shut out of his offices due to the shelter in place order, but indicated that the District has continued to serve the health needs of the community during the pandemic.

Africa Declared Polio Free
Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) are proud to announce an historic public health achievement as the World Health Organization’s African region is now certified wild poliovirus-free.

  • President Gary Howard recognized Carol Bigelow as the Rotarian of the Month for August 2020.  In recognizing her, President Gary noted that Carol is "involved in everything" often behind the scenes without seeking any recognition for herself.  President Gary also noted, "As the Membership Chair, Carol recruits and onboards new members. She is also very active in supporting all of the Club’s activities with her smile, energy, and generosity. Carol is an amazing asset to our Club.  Her efforts and spirit have been the keys to so many of our activities.” Carol is active in multiple Rotary events throughout the year, including the Children’s Christmas Party for children living in battered women’s shelters and the homeless and the Thanksgiving Lunch for Seniors.  Carol definitely exemplifies Service Above Self.  Congratulations, Carol!                                                                                                                                                  
  • President Gary Howard recognized Moms Against Poverty (MAP) as the Organization of the Month for August 2020.  President Gary stated, “The Club is happy to recognize the quiet but highly effective work of Moms Against Poverty. MAP is working with the Castro Valley Unified School District to feed families in our community. They have provided freezers to the District, and they fill it with meat and poultry as well as vegetables, which are not easily accessible through food pantries.   • President-Elect Murline Monat and Jim Negri provided an update on the virtual District 5170 Leadership Academy that Carol Bigelow also attended.  Both Murline and Jim noted that the Club is already doing many of the things that were highlighted in the training, but that the Club can enhance is efforts to better serve the members and the community.  Click here if you are interested in watching any of the sessions.                                                                
  • Past President Todd Anglin reported  that the first order of iPads for nursing homes in Castro Valley will be purchased this week, software and security will be installed, and the units delivered in accordance with all COVID-19 safety requirements.  Watch email for detail on how to participation in the distribution.  Click here for more details and how to donate.                                                                                                                                                      
  • Lance Brede reported that Cliff Sherwood and Chris Carr held the first meeting of the Vocational Committee and are working with Castro Valley High School and Eden Area Regional Occupational Program (ROP) to coordinate vocational.career education speakers.  Contact Lance if you wish to be involved and watch for details in the coming weeks.
