Jerry Chang: Youth in Democracy - Building the Next Generation of Civic Leaders
Apr 28, 2026 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Youth in Democracy: Building the Next Generation of Civic Leaders

Insights from Cal State East Bay’s Youth in Democracy Grant

Jerry Chang’s presentation, “Youth in Democracy: Building the Next Generation of Civic Leaders,” begins with an introduction to his background, his connection to Castro Valley, and Cal State East Bay’s commitment to civic engagement, followed by an explanation of the purpose behind the Youth in Democracy grant. He then explores why youth engagement is essential, highlighting current trends in civic participation, the barriers young people face, and the long‑term impact of early involvement in democratic processes.

Jerry describes the structure and goals of the grant, the partnerships that support it, and the ways it fosters leadership development and hands‑on civic learning. He shares examples of program activities, student‑led initiatives, and key outcomes drawn from Cal State East Bay’s evaluation work. From there, he reflects on lessons learned, including what motivates young people, which strategies are most effective, and why relevance and representation matter. Jerry also outlines opportunities for community organizations—especially Rotary—to support youth civic engagement through mentorship, collaboration, and sustained leadership pathways. He concludes with thoughts on the future of youth participation in democracy and opens the floor for questions.

Matt Kaser: Lifespan of the Human Species
May 12, 2026 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

The Lifespan of the Human Species: Where We Came From, Where We Stand, and What Comes Next

In this thought‑provoking presentation, Matt Kaser explores one of the most fascinating questions in science: How long can the human species endure? Drawing from evolutionary biology, anthropology, and current scientific research, Matt traces the story of humanity from our earliest ancestors to the present day, highlighting the traits that allowed us to survive, adapt, and thrive.

He examines the major forces that shape the lifespan of any species—genetics, environment, technology, and global change—and considers how these forces are influencing our future. Matt discusses the challenges humanity faces, from climate pressures to technological disruption, while also emphasizing the remarkable resilience and ingenuity that define our species.

Rather than predicting doom or offering simplistic answers, Matt invites the audience to think deeply about the choices societies make today and how those choices may shape the long‑term trajectory of humankind. His talk blends scientific insight with accessible storytelling, leaving Rotarians with a richer understanding of our past and a clearer sense of the possibilities ahead.

Matt Kaser: Educator, Researcher & Science Communicator

Matt is a dynamic educator and science communicator known for making complex scientific ideas accessible, engaging, and relevant to everyday life. With a background in biology and science education, Matt has spent his career exploring the intersections of human evolution, environmental change, and the future of our species. His work blends scientific research with a passion for public understanding, helping audiences grasp not only what science tells us, but why it matters.

A longtime resident of Castro Valley, Matt has taught and lectured across the Bay Area, inspiring students and adults alike to think critically about humanity’s place in the natural world. His presentations are known for their clarity, humor, and ability to spark curiosity. Whether discussing genetics, climate, or the long arc of human development, Matt brings a grounded, thoughtful perspective shaped by years of study and a deep commitment to scientific literacy.
