Chief Willie McDonaldfire.acgov.orgWillie McDonald is a native of Fresno, California. He possesses a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from California State University, Fresno, and earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from California State University, East Bay. Willie graduated from the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officers’ Program, completed Harvard University’s fellowship for State and Local Government Officials, and earned Arizona State University’s Certified Public Manager Certificate. In 1978, Willie began his fire career in Fresno as a Firefighter Trainee, promoting through the ranks to Firefighter-Paramedic, Engineer-Paramedic, Captain-Paramedic and Deputy Fire Chief, serving until February 1993. As a Deputy Chief, Willie oversaw In-service and Recruit Training, Emergency Medical Services, Fleet (including Maintenance, Repair and Purchasing), Hazardous Materials Response, Disaster Management and Fire Communications. In 1993, Willie was appointed and accepted his first Fire Chief role in Foster City, CA. He then went on to serve as Fire Chief in San Mateo, CA in 1996, Fremont, CA in 2002, and Scottsdale, AZ in 2004. In Scottsdale, he was provided the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in creating a new Fire Department to replace the private contractor, Rural Metro. Chief McDonald helped to hire approximately 275 employees, procured necessary protective clothing, tools and equipment; and developed policies, practices and procedures. The new Department was officially launched at midnight on July 1, 2005 marking the start of City provided services. In August 2010, Willie was appointed Fire Chief in San Jose, CA, leading the nation’s 10th largest populated city with a Fire Department that employs 790 dedicated members and staff. He moved on to join Las Vegas Fire & Rescue as Fire Chief in August 2013. The Department is highly respected throughout the fire service, is accredited and maintains an ISO Class I designation. Willie was appointed by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors as the Fire Chief of the Alameda County Fire Department on July 14, 2020 and transitioned into this current role on August 17th. |

Ed JellenEd Jellen, a California native born in Los Angeles, is a graduate of U.C. Berkeley and of U.C. Berkeley School of Law. After his law school graduation in 1971, Ed joined the legal department of Bank of America. In 1978, Ed left the bank to start his own law firm with a colleague. The firm limited its practice to bankruptcy and insolvency law. Thereafter, Ed was elected Chair of the Commercial Law and Bankruptcy Section of the San Francisco Bar Association.
In 1987, the federal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals appointed Ed to serve as a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge, a position he held for 25 years. Ed served seven of those years as Chief Judge of the nine-judge Northern District Bankruptcy Court. He has also served as Chair of the Ninth Circuit Conference of Chief Bankruptcy Judges and as Chair of the Ninth Circuit Bankruptcy Judge Education Committee. Ed co-authored Recent Developments in Business Bankruptcy, which appeared in the California Bankruptcy Journal annually from 1996 - 2005.
Ed has also served as a member of the adjunct faculties of both U.C. Berkeley and Stanford law schools, teaching courses in federal bankruptcy law.
Ed joined the Rotary Club of Oakland 1997., and went on to serve as club President during the club’s Centennial year, 2008-2009. During his years as a Rotarian, Ed has participated in numerous Rotary trips. These include visits to Ghana as part of District 5170's first polio eradication mission to that country, Vietnam and Cambodia, helping deliver school supplies and clothing to a number of orphanages, and Guatemala, where Oakland Rotary has installed sanitary stoves and helped bring clean water to the Mayan village of Chibaquib. Ed served District 5170 as District Governor during the 2014-2015 Rotary year and is also a major donor to the Rotary Foundation and a member of R.I’s Bequest Society.
Ed resides in Oakland with his wife, Julie. He is an avid reader and crossword puzzler, loves American and English history, and also enjoys photography, bridge, and listening to 50's rock and roll music.

Ken Sommergeorgemark.orgKen Sommer has approximately 40 years of experience working for Bay Area nonprofit organizations in fundraising, marketing and communications, public relations, and special event production. He currently serves as Director of Advancement for George Mark Children’s House. His previous work experience includes positions with Children’s Hospital Oakland, Glide Church and Foundation, San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation. Ken grew up in the Bay Area and was a resident for 50 years, before recently relocating to Davis, CA in 2023; he is married to Emily and has two sons, Benjamin and Nathaniel. |

Bertha Nevárezwww.calicocenter.orgBertha started working at CALICO in January 1999. Since her start, Bertha has conducted almost 5,000 forensic interviews! Bertha works closely with all of our partner agencies and answers all of CALICO’s after-hours and weekend pages. In addition, Bertha facilitates Spanish peer reviews for Spanish-speaking forensic interviewers throughout the state. Before CALICO, Bertha worked for Alameda Alliance providing psycho-social case management to HIV+ clients. She also was the HIV Testing Coordinator for two hospitals and five clinics and an HIV Outreach Coordinator. |
