JD Ducusin Wins Speech Contest The 2019 Rotary Club of Castro Valley Speech Contest was held on February 12th during the Club’s weekly lunch meeting. The theme for the 2019 Richard D. King Annual Youth Speech contest was “Be the Inspiration."
Miriam Meadows, Castro Valley Unified School District Social Worker/Counselor - After an introduction by Castro Valley Rotarian Parvin Ahmadi, Superintendent of the Castro Valley USD, Miriam described the history and workings of the District’s Wellness Center located on the Castro Valley High School campus. The Wellness Center provides a multi-tier support system for all students at Castro Valley and Redwood High Schools. The Mission of the Wellness Center is to build, together with the CVUSD community, a web of adults, peers, spaces and experiences that make it safe for everyone to grow their best selves.
Ashley Strasburg, Executive Director of the Castro Valley/Eden Area Chamber of Commerce Ashley Strasburg, a member of the Rotary Club of Castro Valley, was the day’s speaker and described the work and upcoming activities for the Castro Valley/Eden Area Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is a member-driven association of businesses and community organizations that work together for the betterment of the communities through the promotion of economic and civic health.
Susan McCue and Kristin Perrault - Alameda County Economic and Civic Development Department After an introduction by January Speaker Chair Brian Morrison, the Club welcomed back Susan McCue, Economic Development Manager, and Kristin Perrault, Economic Development Specialist, from the Alameda County Economic and Civic Development Department for an update on Alameda County activities, especially those activities that impact Castro Valley. The role of the Economic and Civic Development Department is to promote economic development and public/private investment in the unincorporated communities of Alameda County, including the Eden Area communities of Ashland, Castro Valley, Cherryland, Fairview, and San Lorenzo.
Derrick Hall - Solar Energy Systems Membership Chair Virginia Degner introduced Derrick Hall from Solar Energy Systems whom reviewed solar energy options for Club members and guests. Derrick started by
explaining how greenhouse gases trap heat and are making the planet warmer. This warming trend has been recognized by the both the State of California and the U.S. Government. As a result of this trend, they have been developing means of reducing the impact of greenhouse gases.
Zack Ebadi – Adopt-a-Family Program Zack Ebadi is the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (H.A.R.D.) Volunteer Coordinator for its Adopt-a-Family Program. Under the leadership of Dr. Heidi Hausauer, the Rotary Club of Castro Valley has partnered with H.A.R.D. for a number of years on the Adopt-a-Family Program. Zack provided members and guests with a short update on the Adopt-a Family program.
David Rocha, Chief of the Alameda County Fire Department The Club was happy to welcome back Alameda County Fire Chief David Rocha for another presentation, especially considering the recent California fires and the concern regarding potential fires in our community. David grew up in San Lorenzo and attended Chabot College and graduated from the University of San Francisco with a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration (B.P.A.).
Alan West – Chief Rabban of the Aahmes Shriners & Castro Valley Rotarian Al West, a Past President of the Rotary Club of Castro Valley and current member, updated the Club on the work of the AAMHES Shriners, especially the Shriner’s Children Hospital as well as the role Al is playing in the Shriners.
Alameda County Sheriff Greg Ahern - Alameda County Sheriff Greg Ahern was the lunch speaker today. Dwight Perry’s great introduction shared that after starting his career with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office in 1980, Greg quickly moved through the ranks becoming Sheriff on January 8, 2007, the 22nd Sheriff in Alameda County since 1853.
