March . . . but Jim Negri brought 1000 by himself so now “our” goal is 2000 toothbrushes by March per our

Valley Blues Festival Co-chair Dan Willits thanked everyone for their participation and support. Although the
rain held down the attendance, the event continued in the CV Rotary Club spirit! All interested, please plan to

Memorial for Marty and Denali Schmidt, October 27. Mathilde Schmidt invited all CV Rotarians to a
memorial service for her precious son and grandson on October 27 at the Veteran’s Memorial at Castro Valley
Community Center beginning at 11:00 A.M. Marty and Denali were climbing K2 when an avalanche claimed
their lives.

cooking from the Valley Blues Festival went home with him . . . this amount also brings the total to
$1000 brought in by John’s Bride’s cookies so with all the matches, could total $2000-$2500 for the
Club!
PROGRAM - Our program today was the Gary Howard of the Castro Valley Education Foundation.
Gary was recently appointed to the Castro Valley USD Board to replace George Granger, who moved out of
state.
Gary provided a tremendous program of all of the activities and programs sponsored by the CVEF. CVEF is
even stronger now that it has merged with SOS-CV.
Their Mission Statement reads “To promote and enhance educational excellence in the Castro Valley Unified
School District.”
Their Objectives are to: 1) Provide resources for educational activities beyond the standard curriculum and to
provide independent funding for worthy educational programs affected by budget reductions; 2) Sponsor
educational activities that provide additional opportunities that will foster a culture of excellence in all Castro
Valley schools; and 3) Encourage achievement by providing scholarships, awards, and other incentives for
students to excel.
