John Barbieri (Martines 1954-62) talked about tanks, light artillery and be a “Gunny” and “all know the Gunnys ran the Marines, not the officers.”
TL Baily (Marines 1982-90) was a pilot in the Corps who shared that officers “do not eat, sleep or rest until their men do.”  He retired as at Lieutenant Colonel flying a C-130, served in Desert Shield, and also shared the “Devil Hound Story” (HU-RAAH) bringing everyone’s attention to the front of the room!
Emily Barbieri (Bride of John) shared what it was like to be a child POW during WWII in the Philippines.  Raised in China, she spoke perfect Cantonese, and shared how thankful all were when the paratroopers arrived!  She credited her parents with teaching her not to hate and that it was the army of Japan and not the people of Japan who were making war.
Mathilde Schmidt shared her experience of being captured in Strasburg, Germany, on November 23, 1944, and held as a POW.  She shared that they were treated okay, but were not free.
Ryan Huerta (Marines 2006-10) is a Castro Valley High School graduate, who served in both Afghanistan (2007) and Iraq (2009) as a Machine Gunner     shared his experiences serving in Harm’s Way, and echoed the stories of our other Marines.
Mark Poniatowski introduced our featured speaker Don Miller, a World War II Veteran and POW.  Born in Salem, Oregon, in 1923, he moved to Oakland prior to enlisting.  He was trained in a B-24. When they took off that day, they did not know where they were going.  He shared one mission where they took off from England on June 6, 1944, forty-eight bombers took off in four groups of twelve each.  He was told that they were going to “ditch” the plane over the channel but ended up landing in France, was taken prisoner, taken to Brussels, then prison camp then to Brussels and he survived the death march.   He shared that when the POWs were being moved through German town, the German guards had to protect the POWs from the German citizens.  He said the great news was when he heard from the guards “The Russians are coming.”  He has a book he has written available for $20 and copies literally “flew out the door.”
