VISITORS - Al West did a great job introducing everyone present, just not the regular way.  He introduced Mary Oliver-Iglesias (proposed member who works at Prime Pay and sponsored by John Courtney); Wally Bloomquist (one of the all-time greats of CV Rotary!) visited from the East Coast; Leslie Poniatowski (Bride of Mark), Paul Lonsdale (neighbor of Bill Nott) and then Al pulled out his “attorneyeze” . . . President Dr. Heidi said he was going to fine Al for every one of the international students whose name was pronounced incorrectly, so Al simply had each one introduce themselves: Song (South Korea), Elllie (Shanghai), Andrew (South Korea), Ming (Hangzhou, China), YoYo (South Korea and Scribe’s favorite guest), Lu (Shanghai, China), Leo (Guangzhou, China), Marcus (Shenzhen, China) and FyFy (Shandong, China).  Attorney Al then “recognized himself” $20 . . . good example, Mr. West!
PROGRAM - Our seventh program of President Dr. Heidi’s year was . . .  Gary Howard, “Imaging Life” (A book he co-wrote - Biological Systems from Atoms to Tissues).
Wow, where to start . . . Dr. Gary is simply a tremendous speaker who knows how to communicate great depth despite his audience (well, some of us).  Imaging life is how scientists look at the living world.  It is used to put scale on living things.  Understanding life requires a number of imaging techniques and then respective strengths and limitations.
Dr. Howard covered many of the modern imaging methods share great illustrations to make it much more understandable.  He shared that there are two major problems: How can we tell good from bad? And what are single cells or proteins doing?  He provided great examples such as Dr. Alzheimer in his work with Ms. Auguste Deter.  The Robotic Microscope used even has a “Twitter” account (really!).

PRESIDENT DR. HEIDI’S CLUB THEME FOR THE YEAR:  "LIGHT UP ROTARY WITH A SMILE"
(Per our President, we will be Brush up on your Rotary knowledge, Fill a need in Community and International Service, Drill Down deep in your heart for Peace in the World and many more that your Scribe failed to record!)
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL’S THEME FOR THE YEAR:  "LIGHT UP ROTARY" (Think Chinese Lantern as Incoming International President Gary Huang is Chinese from Taiwan)
* * * * *

President Dr. Heidi brought down the gavel for the seventh time of her Presidential Year at Don Jose’s in Castro Valley, and Bonnie Best was asked to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
THOUGHT(s) FOR THE DAY - From Bruce Johnson honoring Dr. Heidi: A young Dentist had just started her own Clinic. She rented a beautiful office and had it furnished with antiques.  Sitting there, she saw a man come into the front office. Wishing to appear the "busy dentist,” the young Dentist picked up the phone and started to pretend she had to give an appointment.  Finally she hung up and asked the visitor, "Can I help you?"
The man said, "Yeah, I've come to activate your phone service.”
SINGING WITH CETA - God Bless America rang through Don Jose’s (Ceta knows all the hand signs, too!)
VISITORS - Al West did a great job introducing everyone present, just not the regular way.  He introduced Mary Oliver-Iglesias (proposed member who works at Prime Pay and sponsored by John Courtney); Wally Bloomquist (one of the all-time greats of CV Rotary!) visited from the East Coast; Leslie Poniatowski (Bride of Mark), Paul Lonsdale (neighbor of Bill Nott) and then Al pulled out his “attorneyeze” . . . WHAT’S HAPPENING WITHIN CASTRO VALLEY ROTARY AND IN CASTRO VALLEY?
For some of the absolute best pictures of our activities, please thank Gary Bosley for his hard work as he has captured many of our events for us.
•    The FESCO pix are at fesco.shutterfly.com . . .
•    The chilicook off shots are at ChiliCookOff2014.shutterfly.com . . .
•    The Eden photos are at edenwaterfall.shutterfly.com . . .
the great thing is that no special access is required on either site -- people just go to the URL (or cut and paste them in in search box) and click on one of the small photos.  The photos enlarge.  Thanks, Gary!

Great illustration of lesson of Getting to the Right Tree including Implications, Imaging Data, Google (really) and Machine Learning.
We also learned about X-Ray Diffraction with more great illustrations and a short introduction to Free-Election Laser Diffraction.  Plus we learned about Pulse Monitors, Atorimc Force Microscopy and the XYZ Scanner!
Wow . . . what a great program . . .
By the way, Imaging Life is not a textbook, but rather, is meant for students and others as an introduction to the field as well as for experts in one field interested in learning about other fields.
The book is available on Amazon, and you can see more at: http://newscenter.lbl.gov/2014/08/07/imaging-life-crosses-biological-boundaries-introduces-integrated-bioimaging/#sthash.aq0lIvQr.dpuf

LOOKING FOR THE MOLAR WITH THE GOLD GLITTER FILLING DONE “JUST FOR US” BY DR. HEIDI - With the $75 and 13 molars in the bag, Dr. Gary Howard reached into the ticket container and pulled out Dr. Gary Howard’s ticket.  Then Dr. Gary Howard reached into the bag searching for the white molar free from decay with golden sprinkles and won . . . $5.00 for pulling a white tooth free of decay but lacking golden sprinkles!  Had Gary pulled out a decayed tooth, he would have had to pay $5.00!
